Neat Facts

Rte. 128 was the first circumferential highway built in the U.S.

At $1 billion+ per mile, the Big Dig is the most expensive public-works project in U.S. history.

In Framingham, Rte. 9 is officially the Ted Williams Highway. In Newton, though, it's officially the United Spanish War Veterans Highway.

Getting around

Despite what you might have heard, you can get heah from theah. But be careful - everything you've heard about Boston drivers is true.

The locate-massachusetts Regional Directory contains a lot of links to local resources. Getting to eastern Massachusetts is easy, whether you fly, take the train or bus or drive. No matter how you get here, though, you'll need maps. While it's not true our major routes were laid out by wandering cows, our thrifty Yankee towns often economize by not putting up signs to identify the major street you're on.

If you do drive, you'll want to check the real-time SmarTraveler traffic reports.

The MBTA runs extensive subway, bus and commuter-rail service. One caveat: Unlike in many other big cities, public transportation stops at 12:45 - earlier on some commuter-rail lines (and some of those lines don't run at all on Sundays).
